Cosmetic Dentistry – Ceramic or Porcelain Veneers
Cosmetic dentistry is generally used to refer to any dental work that improves the appearance of teeth and gums. It primarily focuses on the improvement of dental aesthetics by creating a brighter overall smile, hence often associated with ceramic or porcelain veneers.
At Perth Prosthodontics, we offer ceramic, composite and porcelain veneers to our Perth patients who are looking to close gaps in their teeth, treat any discoloured teeth, or restore their natural smile. Veneers are thin coverings that are bonded onto a tooth’s surface to correct cosmetic and structural flaws. Veneers are a popular treatment to correct a range of dental problems. Including but not limited to, remedying discoloured, poorly shaped, chipped, crooked and unevenly spaced teeth.
If you are considering dental veneer treatment, our team can talk you through the whole process, including veneer costs and treatment information, types of veneers. Contact our South Perth office today on (08) 9368 0888.
Dento-facial and Smile Analysis
Before the commencement of ceramic or porcelain veneer treatment, we must first diagnose all the aesthetic / cosmetic concerns. In doing so, we can identify the specific areas to be improved – such as the proportion of your tooth display and “smile” in relation to your gums (gingiva), lips and face.
Our clinicians at Perth Prosthodontics have undertaken formal advanced postgraduate training in dento-facial and smile analysis, and have in-depth understanding on the art, science and theory behind your “smile”.
An Individualised Treatment
One of the strongest positives, but also most challenging aspect of a ceramic or porcelain veneer treatment, is its patient-specific nature. Not to be conducted in a prescriptive approach, our veneer treatments are individualised to enable a long-lasting, functional result, and an aesthetically / cosmetically pleasing smile that suits you.
The process of a veneer treatment begins by discussing your desired outcome, including the finer details of your smile (such as tooth size, shape, proportions, colour). This is followed with a comprehensive assessment of your teeth to determine whether a veneer treatment is suitable for you.
In some cases, composite fillings for minor modifications, tooth whitening or orthodontic treatment (braces) may be all that you need, and the application of a veneer placement would be over treatment. Where teeth are severely damaged or worn, other treatment options like ceramic crowns or dental bridges may be required.
The Veneer Process
If a ceramic or porcelain veneer treatment is suitable for you, our clinicians at Perth Prosthodontics will work with a master dental technician (ceramicist) to create a diagnostic wax-up or template of the proposed changes. This allows you to visualise your proposed teeth set up / smile using dental casts through physical mock-ups or digitally mock-up photos with your facial photograph.
Based on the desired shape and size of your teeth, we will expertly remove a small amount of the tooth surface, only if and where it is required. In some cases, this can be a very conservative and painless procedure not requiring any local anaesthetic.
While the veneers are being made, temporary veneers reflecting the proposed change will be cemented, allowing you the opportunity to experience the proposed treatment outcome. Your feedback is of paramount importance to contribute to further desired refinements.
With reference to impressions of your prepared tooth surface, clinical photographs and physical and digital analysis of tooth colour, the master dental technician will construct the final ceramic or porcelain veneers. We will select the strongest and most aesthetically / cosmetically pleasing type of ceramic or porcelain material to ensure high strength, durability and an aesthetically pleasing result.
During your second clinical visit, we will check the final veneers for shape, size and colour, and ensure that you are pleased with the result, before bonding them into place with dental adhesive cement.
With meticulous preparation and application by our clinicians at Perth Prosthodontics and construction by a master dental technician, veneers are designed to restore defects while protecting the underlying tooth functions and appear as a realistic, natural tooth for a long period of time.
On a day to day basis, veneers require no special maintenance other than usual oral hygiene measures, like brushing and flossing. Though, like any dental restorations, veneers may become worn and damaged with extended use and time.
Dislodgment, wear and minor chipping may happen when veneers are subjected to tooth grinding or biting into hard objects. In extreme cases, veneers need to be replaced completely but, in most cases, minor adjustments are all that is needed to rectify a problem.
All procedures carry benefits and associated risks and complications. It is best for our clinicians at Perth Prosthodontics to balance these factors and provide professional advice to help you make an informed decision on whether the procedure should proceed.
